1.the dog is the most loyal pet if you ever had a cat then you would know the cat is not quite as loyal as the dog maybe not even close a dog will stick by you right they're very protective and they have different uses as well like they will protect your house what's up everyone in this podcast you are going to learn a ton of words and phrases to talk about pets and animals in general so what are pets well pets are those cute little animals that live in your house rentree right they don't have to pay any rent maybe they destroy your maybe they poo and pee on your floor and maybe just maybe they wake you up at 3:00 in the morning maybe 4 in the morning not just that but we also have to feed them bathe them brush them and when they're sick we have to bring them to the vet which will cost money so why do we do all of that for our pets well we do it because we love them right and because they're cute because if you had a giant spider that did the same things as your dog for example it would cuddle with you when you're lonely you could walk it on a leash it uh barked at strangers who came near your house which would be to see a spider barking but if it did all of that a giant spider would you keep this spider would you want it in your house as a pet I'm going to guess probably not I wouldn't want one that's for sure I love spiders but I wouldn't want to hold one especially a giant one so yeah I think cuteness does have a lot to do with it but of course there are some other reasons as well that we will talk about in this podcast so first we're going to talk about pets in general like what type of pets pets are common and then we'll talk about the health benefits of having pets and finally we will talk about the difference in pet culture between Vietnam and the West when I say the West I mean England USA Canada those places at the very end I'm going to bring in my two lovely cats the and th and they will say hi to you guys but before we get started what's up everyone I'm Carter from what's up English I make content that you can actually understand and that will help you learn lots of and phrases and improve your skills so you can go from the stages and the early stages to the higher level stages where you can watch whatever you want so your English will just get better and better and hopefully it will improve your life so let's get started with the podcast first we're going to talk about pets in general so fun fact uh humans have had pets for thousands and thousands of years in fact the first animal to ever be domesticated can you guess which animal it was it was the dog so the first animal to be domesticated was the dog and that was around 14,000 to 29 ,000 years ago we have had pets ever since we've been living in caves and hunting with Spears and rocks humans have had pets for a long time we can fast forward in time many thousands of years and see that pets were also common among the ancient and the Romans and nowadays there are many many different types of pets and the most common pets are dogs cats and fish people also have pets like birds rabbits hamsters guinea pigs and reptiles like turtles lizards and snakes right now I have two cats I kind of want to get a turtle cuz Turtles are really cute and they seem pretty easy to take care of and even social like they will hang out with you so the number one pet in the world is the dog right what's the reason people love dogs so much well there are a few reasons firstly the dog is the most loyal pet if you ever had a cat then you would know the cat is not quite as loyal as the dog maybe not even close a dog will stick by you right they're very protective and they have different uses as well like they will protect your house they can even be trained to be a service dog for example for blind people to get around a service dog can help them they can be trained to sniff bombs they're just very very useful and cute and loyal so that is the reason humans and people in general have dogs and the next most popular pet is the cat so if you're a cat owner like myself sometimes you might get the feeling that your cat doesn't actually really care about you but sometimes when they want to be very affectionate they will cuddle with you and do this and that but let me tell you the times where my cats cuddle with me the most is during the winter is is it a coincidence I don't think so cats like warmth so when the weather is cold they will cuddle up with me in the summer they don't cuddle up with me so it makes me think are you cuddling with me because you love me or are you just cold right it's probably the latter let's be honest here but that's okay I forgive them I still love them now people also like to have cats because they're more than dogs they're easier to take care of than dogs for example you have to walk your dog every day well you should walk your dog every day maybe twice a day but cats you don't really have to walk them well when you have two cats they play with each other so that's why I got two so they can keep each other entertained and exercise also cats almost almost always go to the bathroom in their litter box almost always the has peed right outside the litter box for some reason but usually they're pretty good while a dog you have to bring it outside now I must admit one downside one of the biggest downsides to having a cat is that they will destroy your things for example rip to my sofa uh the cats have ripped it up quite a bit you might have seen it in my other videos where I filmed in my living room and it's pretty hard to avoid that unless you get a particular type of sofa that they don't like to scratch now to go over fish really quickly um they are not as affectionate as dogs or cats even so people don't usually form a strong emotional bond with them however Fish can be calming to look at and they can be really beautiful too and they're essentially a decoration for your house as well because a nice aquarium with color colorful fish and the light can look really nice it can be a very nice decoration for the room and so that's probably why a lot of people have fish so let's move on to some of the health benefits of owning a pet like a cat or a dog like I said earlier humans have had pets for thousands and thousands of years there must have been reasons for that that we just felt were right for us and were helpful for us right so there are many health benefits scientifically proven of having pets for example some Studies have shown that dog owners have a lower risk of death they had lower blood pressure less stress and overall Better Health than people who didn't own dogs so this could not only be from the dog itself but could also be from walking the dog and doing activities with their dog in the west there are a lot of people who are active they go mountain biking or they go hiking and many of them them have dogs because dogs are a great companion to do those things so it could be that active people who are healthy already will get dogs as well and maybe that's why dog owners in general are healthier than non- dog owners another thing is that when people walk their dog it could force them to interact with other people so then there's not as much isolation for example during covid many people got pets because they felt lonely they felt isolated and so those pets helped them to feel less lonely while they were at home and then when they could go out finally they would walk their dog and see other people and just interact more with other people which is is good for our mental health having pets has also been shown to help people with anxiety and depression for example there are service dogs for people with anxiety when they need to calm down their dog will sense that they have anxiety and they can pet them and relax with them and in my opinion one of the best benefits of having a pet is that It prepares you for having a child of course it's nowhere near as difficult as taking care of a child but it helps you get used to taking care of something whether you want to or not yes of course if you don't want to take care of your cat or dog anymore you can sell it or give it away which you can't do with a child but if you decide to take care of your pets no matter what no matter how sick you feel no matter how busy you are no matter how bad your day was then that will help you get ready for having a child I know it's not as difficult as a child but it's a good stepping stone to having a child in my opinion it's better than going from nothing to having a child which of course is still possible but when you go from a pet to having a child you are a bit used to unconditionally taking care of something no matter what those were the benefits of having a pet so now let's move on to the last part of the podcast which is the culture of pets in Vietnam versus the culture in the west quick story for you guys when I first came to Vietnam I came here with my girlfriend at the time now my exgirlfriend and in the first week or two that we were in Vietnam we went to her aunt and uncle's house they had a big house with a lot of property around it and they had these two dogs that lived outside since I was a foreigner fresh out of Canada I thought oh these are their pet dogs that I'm sure they love very much and I asked her aunt I said what are the names of your dogs so she looked at me Shrugged her shoulders and said yellow dog and black dog and then she laughed and I was like really those are their names of course I realized they don't have names and that these dogs were just to protect the house but there was no emotional bond between the owners and the dogs they would be nice with the owners but even myself after a few hours I couldn't approach them or they would Gra growl and probably bite me if I tried to pet them so that made me think oh well people here in Vietnam don't view Pets the same way as we do in the west but then as time went on I realized the older generation many people in the older generation have pets for function they'll have a dog to protect their house or a cat to catch mice but the younger generation view their pets the same way as we do in the west they treat them like a member of their family for example they feed them good food give them clothes to wear when it's cold they walk them they let them in the house things like that so I believe nowadays there's not not too much of a difference between the pet culture in Vietnam and in the west with the Young Generation in Vietnam there's really not much of a difference except for the price of taking care of your pet for example if you go to the vet in Vietnam it's so much cheaper than going to the vet in Canada or USA my brother he had to do surgery on both of his dogs and they were big dogs and each surgery was about $5,000 so $10,000 for surgery on both dogs meanwhile I did a pretty serious surgery for th in his stomach because he ate plastic he's not very he he eats everything and it's like he's trying to kill himself self but he ate some plastic we did the surgery to remove the plastic and it was about $500 so much cheaper because I think the same surgery would be around at least $1,500 in Canada in terms of that it is different so before I bring the and here I want to remind you there is a PDF in the description for free for for this podcast and if you want to support the channel there is the PDF on my website uh 1,000 most common words if you buy that thank you so much if you don't thank you so much for watching to this point so let me get the Intel I'll be right back okay guys here this D and D it wasn't very want to go on the table go on the table it wasn't very easy to to get them the the is a lot more uh easygoing as you can see he just kind of sits there like dead weight but D he's the one who eats uh everything and has to go to the hospital to get it removed what are you doing man you're just you you you want to meow so as you can see yeah he really he's really chill okay him down and there's the int all right they're gone oh my God they're they're actually kind of heavy hard to pick up so anyway thank you so much guys for watching this podcast I hope you enjoyed it and I will see you in the next one see you later
