1.now turn to section one first you have some time to look at questions 1 to six answer the questions as you listen you will not hear the recording a second time listen carefully to the conversation and answer questions 1 to six hello hello can I speak to Elena please this is Elena speaking hi my name is Jan I'm calling about the car that was advertised on the notice board in the Student Union building is it still for sale yes it is your ad says it's a 1985 selea in good condition it's all but it has been well looked after my family has had the car for 10 years I'm just the third owner and my mother had it before me so we know it's history we've got all the receipts and Records it's had regular maintenance and the breaks were done last year it runs really well but looks its age why are you selling it by the way well I'm going overseas next month to study I'll be away for at least 2 years so I have to sell it unfortunately it's being a good car you want $1,500 is that right I was asking $2,000 but since I need to sell it quickly I've reduced the price would you like to come and take it for a drive I don't live far from the University yes I'd like to have a look what time would suit you anytime this evening is fine um well I finished classes at 6:00 how about straight after that say 6:30 great I'll give you directions when you leave the main gate of the University turn left on South Road and keep going until you get to the Grand Cinema take the first right that's Princess Street I'm at number 88 on the right so it's 80 Princess Street no it's 88 Princess Street and the suburb is Parkwood you'll see the car parked in front it's the red one with the four sale sign on it okay okay Thanks Elena I'll see you later bye before you hear the rest of the conversation you have some time to look at questions 7 to 10 now listen carefully and answer question 7 to 10 later that day at the University Jan meets up with her friend Sam and tells him about the car Hi Sam hey Jen what's happening I'm glad I ran into you I've decided I have to get a car you're going to buy a car do you really need one I'd probably still be driving except that my car broke down last year instead of getting another one I just move closer to the university and went back to riding a bike better for the environment better for my health and I save a lot of money did it really cost that much well when you think of registration Rising petrol cost parking plus maintenance and repairs it adds up I know it's going to be expensive but I really need my own transportation it takes half an hour by bus each way to University as it is but now I'm working at night in the city there's no way I want to hang around waiting for a bus late at night than walk three blocks Home Alone hey I think you've got a point there so what kind of c are you looking at it's an 85 Sela so kind as I used to have the owner's asking $1,500 that's pretty old how many kilomet has it done you know I forgot to ask I'll have to check tonight when I go to see it would you be able to come with me to have a look at about 6:30 sure I'll come but I don't know a lot about cars I do know one thing though I wouldn't buy an old car without having a mechanic look at it first that's a good idea but won't it cost a lot not really you can get a check done through the Association for $80 and it comes with a report on the condition of the car it can save you a lot of money in the long run I'll keep that in mind so we have to get to Parkwood at 6:30 do you want to take the bus it goes straight down South Road every 15 minutes or maybe we could walk I don't think it's that far actually I could borrow my roommates motor bike for an hour or so he's working all evening in the library do you think he'd mind no way he owes me a favor or two okay great see you at 6 outside the student center that is the end of part one you now have half a minute to check your answers now turns to part two part two you will hear some students talking about an assign assment first you have some time to look at questions 11 to 15 now listen carefully and answer questions 11 to 15 hello Tom hello an what have you been doing oh just sitting around catching up with some reading I've had a great time you know we're doing this assignment on what is it museums their costs and benefits that's right well I've been to the sangate museum it was really good these local museums are really interesting because they connect people with the history of one special place we all know about Kings and Emperors and battles and Wars but local museums tell us about the everyday lives of ordinary people and that's why they are so important I'm not so sure about that I think they are of interest but they're so small that they can't give a true picture they do their best I don't really agree they do give a true picture but perhaps not a full picture it's the truth but not the whole truth I think the smallness is the number one problem because they're small and local they attract few visitors that's why they have so little money and because they have little money they can't buy or maintain many really interesting exhibits as a result the shop is almost as big as the museum to try to raise money by selling suits and so on I think they find it difficult but not impossible and don't forget they get a lot of their exhibits free from local people there was this boat for example that was really what was that there was a massive fishing boat a real one about a 100 years old and you could walk on it and get the feeling of what fishing in those days was really like H sounds quite good but I've always found that these kinds of museums are a bit dingy for example the display cabinets are so dark that you can hardly see the exhibits and the labels are sometimes difficult to read before you hear the rest of the talk you have some time to look at questions 16 to 20 now listen and answer questions 16 to 20 so coming back to our assignment what we've got to decide is whether these museums should be funded by the government or just by local people I think it depends entirely on what kind of Museum it is how do you mean well take local history museums they are small so they won't survive without support but that should come from the local Authority since only people in that area or tourists will visit it I agree but what about big natural history museums surely they should get money from the central government why children who want to learn about nature can go out into the with their school teachers they could survive from donations and they get loads of visitors anyway the state should spend more on science museums since not enough people are studying science these days I'm not so sure but I do think a sort of Museum which should not get public funds is the craft Museum yes like museums of cotton weaving yeah which are of interest to only a very small number of people and they should pay for it I agree but a working farm is a different thing again that's something from the past of all of us and so it's important to the local kids can learn a lot too that's the sort of thing that the local government should be spending it money on yes I agree well I think we've got plenty of ideas for our assignment that is the end of part two you now have half a minute to check your answers now turns to part three part three you're are going to hear a conversation between an interviewer and a professor first you have some time to look at questions 21 to 26 now listen to the tape and answer questions 21 to 26 today I'm here with Professor nitic who is our new University president he has been a professor for 20 years and teaches many of the best classes on campus I know many of you have had him as a teacher and know of his Brilliance good morning professor IC thank you for stopping by the student station thank you for having me here it is always great to get to meet many of the students who are involved with our school I haven't been here since 2 years ago yes I remember at that time you were still teaching every semester two years later you're only teaching every once in a while but it seems like you are still always busy the administration world is just as busy as the teaching world for you how do you stay in touch with the university even with the change in your everyday duties I try to stay in touch with what is popular with the University students I usually spend time with as many students as I can they usually give me insight into what the new concerns and beliefs are for the new generation on top of that I try to be as youthful as I can I consider myself to be youthful at least for my age so I always have a good time and try to stay stay young I try my best to not just be a teacher but also participate in university life interesting so are you still doing lots of academic work or are you mostly concentrating on administrative Affairs well I mostly do administrative Affairs now but that doesn't mean that I still don't have a very deep interest in academic matters I often visit other campuses around the world and meet other in my field I learn the most by traveling and seeing the different places of the world and the different fields of thought I even did a television program last month in Manchester will you be on television anytime soon then well you can call the television station and see if I will be on television anytime soon maybe I will be on the news report I don't think it is really that significant though oh really that sounds great I will remember to look out for you let's move on with all your business traveling recently how do you find time for your personal life I try to keep my university life separate from my personal life sometimes it's hard to find time to just take my wife and three kids out for a family dinner but usually we all manage to get together every few days I'm taking a few weeks off next month to take my family down to South America to Brazil for a few days I can't wait to just sit on the beach wow that sounds like a wonderful trip professor nitk could you tell the audience a little about what goes on in an average day of a university administrator an average day oh I don't think there is such thing as an average day for me the last few weeks I've been traveling all the time I can be in Los Angeles in the morning and in New York by the afternoon and back to Los Angeles by the evening sometimes I will spend the whole week at a new University showing the new administrators the ins and outs of running a university sometimes I can spend the whole day in the office on the phone so there really is no average day for me I guess that is because I do so many different tasks sorry to let all the viewers down but that is the plain truth now look at questions 27 to 30 now listen to the tape and answer questions 27 to 30 well I guess I can sum it up for them you are a busy man that is probably a good description so are there any immediate plans for the coming few weeks well I'm in Los Angeles for the next 2 days and then I fly to Colorado to meet a new prospective Professor for our University I will be in Colorado for about a week then I go to Japan for the next 10 days to meet with our University branch in Japan about record sales there after that I returned to Los Angeles for a week just in time for the graduation of the class of 20 one there you have it my next month's schedule thank you very much Professor nitic I always enjoy having you on our show we hope to have you back in our show next time that is the end of part three you now have half a minute to check your answers now turns to part four part four I've asked you here just to remind you about this Friday's field trip first you have some time to look at questions 31 to 40 now listen carefully and answer questions 31 to 40 okay I'd like to keep this meeting as brief as possible as I'm sure we all have things to do I've asked you here just to remind you about this Friday's field trip this is the first of many field trips you'll be going on so that are a few rules I'd like to make clear now most I want you all to remember that simply because you are leaving the college does not mean that you are not studying this is an essential part of your course and should be treated as such there will be two assignments for you to complete whilst you are there and some extension work you will be expected to do over the weekend so I suggest you all pay attention on the day moving on remember that we are going to assault Marsh and must dress appropriately high heeled shoes and t-shirts are not what I consider appropriate you need good Footwear preferably boots and you should bring a waterproof jacket as the weather is unpredictable it would also be a good idea to bring a change of clothes there is a chance you will get wet and a three-hour return journey in damp clothes is nobody's idea of fun we'll be on the marsh from about 10:00 to about 4: so you'll be given a light Lune however if you want to bring any snacks with you then please feel free to do so although we will be stopping for dinner on the way home now this is the fourth time that college has been to Park Drive salt marsh and so far we have never lost a student however remember that there are 28 people going and if you are late you'll be keeping myself and your colleagues waiting and at that time in the morning you will not find me very forgiving please try to arrive a few minutes before 700 if you're not here on the hour you risk being left behind for those of you who are being collected in the evening you can expect to be back here between 8:30 and 9:00 p.m

2.but do warn whoever may be coming for you that the traffic is unpredictable and it may well be later before you go I'll hand out your assignment papers and briefly explain what you have to do now on the first page all you are required to do is identify the floor and forner on the page and find an example in the salt marsh as I told you on Monday you will need a camera for this I recommend one of those disposable cameras rather than something more valuable as the marsh can get very dirty now on page two you'll be looking more at the bird life on the marsh you should be able to see what you have to do for this assignment but there will be plenty of time on the way there to ask any other questions well we'll stop there and I'll see you W on Friday morning oh before you go just a word of caution the plants are there to be seen and photographed only remember that this is a protected site and we have to get permission for this trip if there are any problems we may not be allowed to go again and you'll be spoiling the opportunity for other students okay if you have any questions come and see me later today or tomorrow that is the end of part four you now have half a minute to check your answers give [Music] [Music] going give it to [Music] me it going [Music] down me
