print type in 5 seconds pop out the ball put your hands on your head what the head you know he's got over 200 checks here a of Indi drafting he even has a little payroll envelopes to himself from put it down drop it relax you're late all right my name is Allan Barry Allen United state secret service your boy just tried to jump out the window my partner has him in custody I don't know what are you talking about you think the FBI are the only ones on this guy I mean come on come on he's dabbling in government checks here been following a paper trail on this guy for months now hey you mind taking that gun out of my face please really I mean it makes me nervous we see some credentials yeah sure take my whole wallet you want my gun too come over here take take my gun hey hey look just do me a favor take a look outside look look out the window my partner's walking into the car as we speak look old guy almost pissed in his pants when I came through the door he jumped right through the window under the hood of my car hey murf yeah call the LAPD again I don't want people walking through my crime scene in the scene the FBI agent bursts into an apartment confident that he's about to catch the young criminal however Frank pretends to be a secret service agent since Carl the FBI agent has never seen Frank before he falls for the trick allowing the criminal to escape once again you know he's got over 200 checks here IND on your head drafting he even has a little payroll envelop Dr to himself from put it down drop it relax first of all you might ask why is it India ink not Indian ink like Indian spices or Indian tea for example the name India ink comes from its Origins it was first created in China but the materials used to make it were exported through India so the name stuck as India Inc well here's the ink artists use it to create images and it's a liquid commonly used for writing or printing Frank used India ink because it's known for its long lasting quality and richness making it ideal for things like drafting which is creating drafts or sketches or in Frank's case making fake checks I got right to work on creating the perfect hair dye shoe polish India ink permanent marker I tried them all you know he's got over 200 checks here a of Indian on your head drafting he even has a little payroll envelop to rescue himself from put it down drop it relax in the US they measure liquids in gallons instead of liters one gallon is about 3.8 lit still use gallons mostly because of history when the country was founded the British measurement system which included gallons was already in use while the UK later switched to the metric system the US stuck with the old now if you are a coffee addict being in the US you could say that you drink gallons of coffee check out this example from How I Met Your Mother no I'm sorry I I I shouldn't have spent the last 6 years passive drinking gallons of coffee around you and I shouldn't have taken that sewing class to learn how to make that wedding present costume you know he's got over 200 checks here a of Indian drafting even has little payroll envelopes to himself from put it down drop it relax one of my friends says that Friday is his favorite every day because it's payday on your payday you would usually receive your salary especially before these total in payroll envelopes this is an envelope with a paycheck in it to be on payroll means to be employed by a company or and receive a regular payment for your work we keep him on payroll put him back on tenting houses setting up the lab and so forth we keep him close you're late all right my name is Allan Barry Allen United States Secret Service your boy just tried to jump out the window my partner has him in custody I don't know what are you talking about having someone in custody means keeping them under police control after you're arrested you are then held in custody while the police decide of what to do next I got him it's all right my partner has him in custody I don't know what you're talking about you think the FBI are the only ones on this guy I me come on let's break down this sentence I don't know what you're talking about we've got here a drop of the T sound in the anti letters combination I don't know becomes I don't know then we have a stop T at the end of what we prepare to pronounce the T sound but then don't let the air out leaving the sound silent what what your what Your and finally we have a reduction of a nasal sound at the end of talking and have it merged with a schw sound from about uh about talking about talking about I don't know what you're talking about listen again and repeat I don't know what you're talking about I don't know what you're talking about has it happened to you that you got a chance to have a real English conversation and practice you're speaking with someone you feel that excitement that you want to ask many questions and you also want to share about your last travel but then comes this moment when you start feeling awkward and frustrated because of frequent pauses you make and because these words you were learning just don't come to you at the moment when you need them I know this sucks and I've been there myself and what you going to do will you stop trying to to practice your speaking no you should do the opposite you should speak even more but this time you should be smarter with your vocabulary practice and that's where the real life English app comes in let me tell you how it works on the app you will find this video and also our podcast videos with interactive transcripts that means that you will be clicking on unfamiliar words and checking their meanings but the best part is we create flashcards deck of flash cuts for each lesson on the app covering all the most important vocabulary for you to have this vocabulary practice and never forget a word you are learning practicing just 10 15 minutes a day will help you transform these new words from your short ter into your long-term memory and the space repetition software that we built into our app will make this process efficient because those difficult words that you can't remember somehow will be a appearing for you at spaced intervals at the moments when you are about to forget them so they'll stick with you forever eventually I highly recommend you check it out the app is free to download simply search for real life English in Google Play or apple Play Store or use the link we left in the description under this video I would really want you to try it and let me know how was your experience you think the FBI are the only ones on this guy I mean come on come on he's dabbling in government checks here been following a paper trail on this guy for months now when you dabble you try it out you experiment for example you may dabble in painting but not be a professional artist in the context of this clip it means being involved in something you shouldn't be doing Frank is dabbling in or involved in making fake government checks I mean come on come on he's dabbling in government checks here been following a p paper trail on this guy for months now picture yourself taking a walk in nature when you're hiking you usually follow the trail right it's the path that takes you somewhere now when we say paper trail we're talking about a similar idea it's like a path made of documents or records that shows what someone has been doing over time if you leave a trail you leave Clues behind so is there any way that I can get his record without leaving the paper TR I'm sorry but I can't release records without documentation hey you mind taking that gun out of my face please really I mean it makes me nervous we see some credentials yeah sure we usually start a sentence with do you mind when you want to make a polite request like in do you mind opening the window but as you could see in the clip the native speakers usually drop the word do so the sentence starts with you mind or even further reduction happens sometimes and you can hear mind as the beginning of such sentences check this out in this example I've been pretty upfront about it but to want to destroy that's pretty serious you mind telling me why credentials are documents or qualifications that prove your abilities achievements or authority in a particular field Carl asked Frank for credentials to see if he's a real secret service agent ah you want to see my credentials there you want my gun too come over here take my gun hey hey look just do me a favor take a look outside look do me a favor is a common phrase used to ask for help or a small request it's casual and friendly and sometimes people use it in a joking way too depending on the situation cousin listen do me a favor okay I'm trying to get us out of this hole all right I want today to go smooth please do not bring that up hey hey look just do me a favor take a look outside look look out the window we have a connected speech here in this phrase take a look so the k sound from take is linked with awah sound from a take a take a look and the k sound from look is linked to the next word as well look outside look outside so they all form one big chunk take a look outside take a look outside listen and repeat take a look outside look take a look outside look old guy almost pissed in his pants when I came through the door he jumped right through the window under the hood of my car hey murf yeah call the LAPD again I don't want people walking through my crime scene hood is the front part of a car that covers the engine in British English the hood of a car is called the bonnet oh I have faith in you but this isn't a junkyard this is a garage hey pop the hood pop the hood pop the [Music] hood sir I'm on the Bonnet get in the car sir hey murf yeah call the LAPD again I don't want people walking through my crime scene LAPD stands for Los Angeles Police Department you'll probably hear it mentioned a lot in movies and TV shows set in LA or Los Angeles LA and LAPD are acronyms words made by taking the first letters of a phrase and putting them together all right guys now let's watch the second part of the clip and see if the FBI agent is able to figure out that Frank is fooling him by to be someone [Music] else I didn't expect the Secret Service on this don't worry about it what's your name hand ready Carol hand ready mind if I see some identification sure you know you never can be too careful these days well tough luck Carl 5 minutes earlier you would have landed yourself a pretty good collar s right 10 seconds later and you'd have been shot mind if I come downstairs with you I I got a take a look at this guy sure thing just uh do me a favor and sit tight for a second while I get this evidence downstairs you know I don't want some maid walking through here and make in the bed LAPD should be here any SEC wait you all it you hang on to it for a minute I trust you [Music] [Music] hey oh God damn it mind if I see some identification sure you know you never can be too careful these days identification is something that shows who you are like an ID card if you remember in the previous part of the clip we had the word credentials so what's the difference between these two words credentials show what you are qualified to do while identification just simply shows who you are no no I'm I'm not dead my brother's dead I'm very sorry to hear that thank you I'm sorry for your loss too can I see some kind of identification yeah well tough luck Carl 5 minutes earlier you would have landed yourself a pretty good collar it's all right 10 seconds later and you'd have been shot tough luck is a phrase you can use when something doesn't go well for someone for example if your friend missed the last bus home you might say tough luck man it's often used in a light-hearted or sympathetic way but sometimes it can be a bit teasing depending on the situation take this scene for instance no no no no no no no not beer prco but I hate well tough luck Lucinda loves it in police jargon callor is a casual way to refer to catching or arresting someone somebody made a collar not loving you talking about my butt bounce but also hell yeah someone collor a big dog so to land a collar means to successfully arrest a criminal you've probably heard the word land in the phrase land a job meaning to successfully get hired in this case land a collar works the same way but it means making a successful arrest we learned a lot about your bio from your testimony good upbringing good college Landing your dream job 3 months after arriving here wow how about reviewing the conditionals look at these sentences again well tough luck Carl 5 minutes earlier you would have landed your yourself a pretty good caller all right 10 seconds later and you'd have been shot could to Define if the situation described in these sentences is real or unreal there are four types of conditionals two for real situations and two for unreal this is an imaginary situation first Frank says if you had arrived here 5 minutes earlier you would have landed yourself a good color and then Carl answered if I had arrived 10 seconds later you would have been shot yes you could have noticed that the sentences don't have the If part which is a very common thing in conversational English so these two sentences deal with the imaginary situation that didn't happen in the past and to express it we use the third type of conditionals here it is formed by the past perfect in the if clause and would have Plus past in the main clause now you could practice it a little bit by writing the sentences using the third conditional in the comments below mind if I come downstairs with you I I got to take a look at this guy sure thing just uh do me a favor and sit tight for a second while I get this evidence downstairs you know I don't want some maid walking through here and making the bed LAPD should be here any SEC wait we've covered some grammar now let's check the connected speech Carl says I got to take a look at this guy what happens here I have got two becomes I got I got as we've seen in the previous example the k sound from take links to the schwa sound and then onto the next word take take a look and the K from look links to the a sound from at look at take a look at then the T from at emerges into the the sound from this at this so we don't fully pronounce the T sound at this and the whole phrase sounds like take a look at this guy take a look at this guy listen and repeat I got to take a look at this guy I got to take a look at this guy sure thing just uh do me a favor and sit tight for a second while I get this evidence downstairs if you ask someone to sit tight you tell them to wait and stay where they are this is important I'll figure it out you sit tight don't want anyone in evidence is anything that can help to show something is true especially when it comes to solving a crime for example in a detective show you might the police find fingerprints or a clue at the scene and that's what we' call evidence it helps them figure out who did it or what really happened a person who cleans rooms or houses it used to be called a maid but nowadays we usually use the word housekeeper or for housekeeping as a service in a hotel I'm placing an ad for a housekeeper housekeeper why do you need a housekeeper I need someone to be there when the children get home from school to clean possibly start dinner your wallet you hang on to it for a minute I trust you hang on to it is just a casual way of saying keep it for now for example if someone lends you a book or a jacket and says you can hang on to it it they're saying you can have it until you need to return later so it's the same as saying no rush you can keep it for now you just hang on to this T oh no no you said we were just going to talk to her we are this will help I hope you enjoyed the lesson and learned a TA with us today and now it's time for a test hands on your head you know that's a new IBM selectric put your hands on your print type in 5 seconds pop out the ball put your hands on your head put your hands you know he's got over 200 checks here a of Indian on drafting he even has a little payroll envelope to himself from put it down drop it relax you're late all right my name is Allan Barry Allen United States Secret Service your boy just tried to jump out the window my partner has him in custody I know what are you talking about you think the FBI are the only ones on this guy I mean come on come on he's dabbling in government checks here been following a paper trail on this guy for mon now in this context if you are dabbling in something it means you are good stuck and Confused involved in something gambling your [Music] money hey you mind taking that gun out of my face please really I mean it makes me nervous you see some credentials yeah sure for take my whole wallet you want my gun too come over here take my gun hey hey look just do me a favor take a look outside look look out the window my partner's walking him to the car as we speak look old guy almost pissed in his pants when I came through the door he jumped right through the window under the hood of my car hey murf yeah call the LAPD again I don't want people walking through my crime scene show the part of the car that's called the [Music] hood I didn't expect the Secret Service on this don't worry about it what's your name hand ready Carol hand ready might if I see some identification sure you never can be too careful these days well tough luck Carl 5 minutes earlier you would have landed yourself a pretty good caller it's all right 10 seconds later and you'd have been shot what does this sentence mean [Music] it means that if the FBI agent had arrived earlier he could have rested the guy himself mind if I come downstairs with you I got to take a look at this guy sure thing just uh do me a favor and sit tight for a second while I get this evidence downstairs you know I don't want some maid walking through here and making the bed LAPD should be here any SEC wait your wallet you hang on to it for a minute what does it mean to sit tight and why does Frank ask the FBI agent to sit tight it means to relax and wait without taking action sit in a very comfortable position move quickly and take [Music] action so the correct variant is a and he asks the FBI agent to sit and wait until Frank brings the evidence this way the housekeeper won't change anything at the crime scene thank you so much for learning with us today and please remember to subscribe to our Channel and hit the Bell down below not to miss any of our newest lessons you may also practice all the new words from the inside you had to climb down the balcony been away 3 days judging by the laundry
